Important Travel Advice: De Betteld 2017

[Last updated 15th of February 2017]

The 2017 ICCM-Europe conference is being held at the same place it was in 2015: De Betteld, Netherlands. De Betteld is a two-hour train ride east of Amsterdam’s airport. You have several options on traveling here. Depending on where you’re coming from, one method will make the most sense. Whichever way you choose to travel, please send an email to registration(at)iccm-europe.org to let us know how you will be arriving and when.

Getting here can be tricky, especially if you need to fly. Please take the time to review and follow these guidelines:

Travel by Plane

If flying, the best way to get here is to fly to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) and then take a train to Doetinchem Train Station. There are other airport/train options if you wish to shop around. Whatever you find, if you tell us your planned arrival time at the Doetinchem Train Station, we will have someone there to pick you up and take you to DeBetteld. This shuttle service will be available on Tuesday (14 February), Wednesday (15 February), and Saturday afternoon (18 February). Send your full itinerary and planned arrival time to registration(AT)iccm-europe.org.

Get Off Here

CAUTION: Be aware that there is another train stop with a very similar name (Doetinchem-De Huet) about 4 minutes earlier.
Be sure to get off at Doetinchem.

When you are close to arriving (within 20 minutes), please call to let us know that you are almost here: WhatsApp or SMS: [+31 6 twenty sixty twenty 47] or landline: +31 (0) 314 627 268. If you can’t call us because your phone doesn’t work in the EU, make sure you send an e-mail (registration(AT)iccm-europe.org). There is at least one hour free WiFi at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Once at the Doetinchem train station, assuming you have given us your travel schedule, we will have a car waiting (or arriving soon) near the 3 multi-colored shapes next to the station building (We have no confirmation in 2017 that they are still there). Look for the ICCM-Europe logo carried by someone or in a car window. If you get here and no one is around, wait inside where you can see the 3 multi-colored shapes next to the station building. A car will arrive close to these shapes. UPDATE: At the moment there is construction works going on at the station. This makes it harder for a vehicle to access the station. We will park our car and send a person to the multi-colored shapes carrying an ICCM sign or wearing an ICCM shirt.

Doetinchem Train Station Hours

There is only an inside waiting area and no longer a ticket desk. Tickets are sold with a self-service ticket machine. (more info below)

Purchasing Train Tickets at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

You will travel to the Doetinchem Train Station. As an estimate, one-way 2nd class tickets from Schiphol (AMS) to Doetinchem are  €20.90 (about $22.50 USD, 2017 prices). You may buy tickets at the train station, but there are many options and limited ways to pay:

  1. Check with your local (non-Dutch) travel agent to see if they will offer you a Dutch train ticket for the two travel days. We do not have more information about this option, but I know from the USA this has worked well in the past. I am not sure if this still works now the entire public transport has switched to chip cards in recent years.
  2. Buy your one-way single use chip card when you arrive at SCHIPHOL airport.
    • The self-service ticket machines now also accept credit cards, Mastro, Mastercard and Visa (NOT American Express) and Dutch debit cards. Some machines also accept euro coins.
    • We, therefore, advise people who want to purchase tickets at the stations to use a Tickets & Service Office where you can talk to a person (in English) and buy a ticket. This is located next to Starbucks and the Police station in the main area of the airport. Please make sure you do buy a train ticket before getting in the train otherwise you might end up paying a large fine (35 euro fine + train fare 21 euro). You should be able to use banknotes/cash (and credit cards) if you go to the ticket office.
    • Make sure you get a normal second class ticket. 1st class is only for business travelers and does not add much except for a price increase.
    • All you need is a One-way journey single use chip card because return tickets are only valid on the same day. It is NOT possible to buy a similar ticket in advance for the return date. You will have to buy a similar ticket on Doetinchem Station when you depart.
    • More information about single use chip cards can be found here. You buy a disposable paper card with a chip valid for only this one trip. MAKE SURE you check in at a chip card check-in pole before entering a train. You need to check out at Arhem (NS -yellow-)and check back into another train provider (Arriva -red-) before entering their train for the last leg of the journey. Failing to check in renders you card invalid. See picture:
  3. If you have access to a Dutch bank card, you can buy an e-ticket online and print your own ticket. You cannot pay for these without a Dutch bank account. These e-tickets can be purchased 30 days in advance and the name on the ticket needs to match your passport name (or other valid ID)

Detailed, Step-By-Step Instructions

Travel Preparation

  1. Arrange for travel to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport (AMS) arriving on Tuesday (14 February) or Wednesday (15 February) and departing on Saturday (18 February). When buying airfare, keep in mind the train commute alone will be about 2 hours.
    1. On Wednesday, we will have a meal waiting for you at the conference center (starts 18:00). Try to land at the airport no later than 15:00 (3:00 PM) to give yourself one hour to get your checked luggage and two hours for the train.
    2. On Saturday, because the conference is over at 12:45, the earliest shuttle to the train station leaves at 13:00 (1:00 PM). If you really  need an earlier shuttle to make it for a flight, make sure you check with us about the possibilities.
  2. Email your travel plans to registration(AT)iccm-europe.org so we know when to expect you at the train station.

Arrival Travel Day

  1. When you arrive at Schiphol airport (AMS), after retrieving any checked luggage, find your way to the Schiphol Train Station. The way there is clearly marked throughout the airport. It is located underneath the airport building. You do not even have to go outside. Buy a ticket and take the (suitcase friendly) escalators down to the right platform.
  2. You will take two trains (or three) to get to Doetinchem.
    1. Sometimes you have an extra train change at Utrecht. Maybe try to avoid this. Utrecht is a large, but well-signposted station.
    2. Take the Nijmegen train and get off at Arnhem. Platforms change, so be sure to follow the signs in the train station.
    3. At Arnhem, take the Doetinchem train to Doetinchem. Again, platforms change, so be sure to follow the signs in the train station.
  3. If your flight was delayed or you’ve had other complications, send us an email (registration(AT)iccm-europe.org) from the airport using the one hour of free WiFi available there.
  4. When you’re about 20 to 30 minutes out from Doetinchem, give us a call (+31 (0) 314 627 268), especially if you had any changes to your schedule along the way. If you’re unable to call from your cell phone, don’t worry, we’ll be making regular trips.
  5. At Doetinchem, go to the 3-colored landmark and then look for the ICCM-Europe logo carried by a person or in the windows of a vehicle. Enjoy your time at De Betteld!
  6. If you can’t find us, either call or wait a few minutes for us. During office hours, seating is provided in the train station if it is too cold to wait outside, but make sure you check for our car arriving outside.

Departure Travel Day

  1. Lunch is served at 12:45 on Saturday and this concludes ICCM-Europe 2015. Because our drivers will need to eat lunch, Shuttles will not depart until 13:00 (1:00 PM). If you really need an earlier shuttle to make it for a flight, please contact registration before the conference to check the possibilities.
  2. Make arrangements with ICCM registration to let them know when you need a ride back to the train station.
  3. You will take the same two (or three) trains to get back to the airport. Remember to get off at Arnhem and then take the train to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. Announcements in this train will also be in English.

Train

If you are taking the train without first taking a plane you could be coming from just about anywhere. We’re going to assume that you know your way around the European train system. Just make sure you get to the take a train to the Doetinchem Train Station on Tuesday (14 February) or Wednesday (15 February) before 18:00. Also, don’t forget to give us your itinerary and planned arrival.

General Tips

Note: To use some credit cards here, you may need a 4-digit pin. This has caused people trouble in the past. Go online or call customer service for your card provider and ask for a pin.
