Workshops during ICCM 2010

There will be a number of workshops during ICCM 2010. We are still working on getting them organized.
Here is an overview of what we are planning.

Teach others about what you know!
If you are a specialist in some area and want to teach others about it, please let us know!

ICCM is so much more than workshops:
The TMF contest gives you a chance to tell others about innovating projects you are doing. BOF sessions allow you to share knowledge with others in an even more informal way. The many meals and evening times allow you to make friendships that last a lot longer than the conference. Interested to find out more? Use this link!

Here are the 2010 workshops. Please know some things might still change!

About Courtney:
Courtney Roes has worked in the banking, manufacturing and IT consultation arenas dealing with hardware installation, software development and network design before he was called to full time work with Greater Europe Mission's eDOT ministry where he is the Technical Team Leader. eDOT is about using technology to connect people to people for the sake of making God known. Check out his personal blog at http://www.RoesGarden.com.

Workshop specific info:
Wordpress, originally an open source blogging software, has expanded greatly to now be a very light weight content management system. As of November 2009, there were over 2.9 million active self-hosted Wordpress sites - many of which are not blogs. Wordpress is written in PHP/CSS with a MySQL backend. With expansions of the Wordpress code to ideas like Wordpress MU (allows for thousands of Wordpress sites to run from a single Wordpress install) to BuddyPress (turns a Wordpress site in a social networking site), we're able to look to Wordpress as the basis for many web applications. In this workshop, we will look at how Wordpress can be used for more than just blogs on the web. We'll also look at how to expand Wordpress using various theme and plugin features including how to build a simple plugin (some php knowledge needed for this part).
Alternatives to the Adobe Suite
Hasso Weeke (50) was trained as an Interior Decorator, but rerouted into IT. After a multitude of different courses, such as COBOL-programming, AMBI, OS/400, AIX, ITIL, he became Microsoft Certified System Engineer. Job history covers several fields and is currently employed as senior system engineer for a small ICT servicebureau. In addition he started his own webdesignbureau RED PILL Design and is aiming to pursue that full-time. This would give him more time to expand his volunteer work for Hands to Serve, the initiator of this conference.

About the session:
When you look around in webdesignerland, Adobe's Dreamweaver and Photoshop seem pretty much the standard tools to use. I often get a feeling that, when I tell other webdesigners that I use much cheaper tools, they tend not to take me serious.
See for yourself what I use and why I think the Adobe Suite is overrated...
About Mark:
Mark Stephenson is an Electrical Engineer with over 20 years experience in research and development of complex software systems primarily in the aerospace industry. About 6 years ago, Mark left his job at a large technology company and entered into full-time Christian ministry. Mark started and continues to lead the Web-Empowered Church (WEC) ministry, which is based on TYPO3. Mark has a U.S. Patent due to be awarded shortly that defines a technique to securely traverse network firewalls. In addition, Mark is the author of the popular book, Web-Empower Your Church: Unleashing the Power of Internet Ministry.

Live Over Skype:
With the help of Daniel Doesburg and Gerard Wijngaarden, two experienced TYPO3 experts, Mark Stephenson will conduct the live presentation from Ohio in the United States using Skype video and desktop sharing.

About the workshop:
Using the TYPO3 Content Management System to Web-Empower Your Mission TYPO3 is an enterprise-class content management system for developing powerful database-driven websites. Even though TYPO3 is open-source software and free to use, its power rivals that of high-end commercial systems. This presentation will provide a brief overview of TYPO3 followed by an introduction to the Web-Empowered Church (WEC) ministry and its free software. WEC is based on TYPO3, but helps you get started very quickly and then provides many add-on modules that provide advanced ministry-driven features you can use to web-empower your ministry activities. Churches and Christian organizations around the world are already using WEC. You will learn what this powerful web ministry software is doing and can do for you.
Short bio:
Since I was young I like working with computers, but what really caught my interest during my college period was the internet and websites. I learned PHP / MySQL and have been doing that for 15 years now. Two years ago I gained increasing interest on the terrain of SEO. Within months I knew 'everything' about it (although I'm still learning every day.) I'm employed as a web developer for a small internet company, where I also do SEO projects.

About the workshop:
SEO is all about Google and getting a top position in world's #1 search engine. It seems like this is 'business for businesses' and doesn't have anything to do with missionary work. In this workshop I hope to discover with you that this statement is wrong. See what linkbuilding can do for you, your mission and other organisations you work with or for, together building a vast network of links. How to get more and the right visitors to your website? All this and more, will be answered in this workshop.

Efficient and effective communication.....art, skill or science?
We think that good communication is vital if you want to be efficient in your job as ICT specialist.
Everybody will probably recognize some of the hilarious situations when you watch the IT crowd, a funny and crazy television show about IT people deep down in the basement of their company. Are IT people really sending an e-mail to the fire department in case of an fire with "Fire!...help....help...help"(episode "fire!, fire!" series 1)? Probably a little exaggerated but a lot of IT people will acknowledge that it's difficult to communicate in an efficient and effective way to colleague's or clients.
Some of the questions we will ask ourselves are:

- Do I dare NOT to communicate through e-mail?
- How can I explain technical complex issues to non-techies?
- What is a customer-oriented attitude in my daily job?
A modern manager is a coach

Every manager has the responsibility for one or more people. One of the challenges a modern manager has is to coach your people. During this interactive workshop we will try to discover what coaching is and how it can help you in your job as a manager. You will be challenged to reflect on how to set up coaching in your own environment. How can you stimulate your employees, the most valuable resources you have, in discovering their potential?
About Corné
Corné de Keizer (34) is CISSP and CISA certified and works as information security consultant at Motiv in The Netherlands. Within this job he is mainly focusing on information security management and security architectures. Motiv also supports his work as secretary of the board at the Uganda Child Care Foundation (UCCF).

“How to determine the strategic value of your IT systems for the organisation”.
IT is basically not about technology. IT is about the right way of provisioning information to professionals who need this information to make decisions on a daily basis. The "T" in IT is just the way of making this provisioning possible in a smart and structured way. A primary focus on technology in the information provisioning process enlarges the chance on making the wrong decisions and unneeded technological solutions. Focussing on technology only also makes it difficult for management to decide about solutions and - more important - to allocate budgets to IT projects and IT departments.

Of course there is always a moment to choose IT solutions to provide the information your professionals need. It is important to realise that the choice for these IT solutions should be based on their strategic value for the organisation and not on their “this-is-a-cool-product-we-really-should-use-this value”

This workshop helps you to use the Information Security method of Business Impact Analysis to determine the strategic value of the information and corresponding information systems. A structured method will be provided to you to find out what the desired value of availability, integrity and confidentiality of information should be for your specific organisation. Based on the values of these factors - decided by the business owners, NOT IT owners - the value of each information system can be put in perspective to the organisations goals. The results give management a firm foundation to make informed decisions on IT budgets and – finally - to choose the proper IT solutions for your organisation.

I am interested in CRMsystems because we are searching for one for our church. Any suggestions?

Rene Altena — 15 February 2009, 16:44

Is there also a possibility to speak on ERP-systems? This is a very important part of the IT-spectrum that has a broad impact on the way organizations are managed, people work, societies are supported...?
